WILLS WEEPS

With one of the best debut songs of 2016, the truly promising newcomer WILLS moves onto track number three, ‘Weeps’. In contrast to experimental ‘Woes vs. Whoas’, the bombastic soul of ‘Solid Gold’, tertiary track ‘Weeps’ explores a softer side to WILLS' sound. It’s a bittersweet narrative told through his dynamic vocals, from the whispered, introspective openings and intervals to the ambient choruses that rise up in thanks for a confidant to hear his words and his tears. There’s a reason for this rapid variation in volume and tone, as the Bronx-based artist details: "*Weeps is a song about the dynamism of tears; ranging from silent cries to loud moans. *Weeps is a song about crying as a shared language that transcends time/space. *Weeps is a song about making spaces to hear quiet and codified communication." It’s a song that gets to the heart of its subject matter, guided by samples of a golden age soul number, the kind of song you’d want to cry to. Naturally, WILLS takes that retro inspiration and fast-tracks it into the future with his wild production skills. As ever, his music is intimate, bold, rather dark and altogether progressive. - HT
